When I started growing irises, I noticed in the flower catalogs that each one had a name. I didn't think about why or how they got those names. Once I started growing more and more irises, and learning about iris culture, I learned what those names meant. Each iris has a different name - a name given to it by its hybridizer. Though you see irises of the same color, each one is unique in its own way. The pink iris in your garden is likely different from one you see in someone else's yard. If you don't know the name of the iris, it's almost impossible to find out what it is - there are hundreds of iris varieties. This is why I suggest that you take time to get garden markers where you can write the name of each iris so you know what you have. Keeping a written record (iris journal) is also helpful.
