Since I joined I the Historical Iris Preservation Society, I've learned so much about iris history in the United States. It's remarkable how many people have played a part in keeping the love of irises growing in the States. From hybridizers, to nurseries, to hobby gardeners - everyone has played a part. Occasionally, you learn about the more "eclectic" ways that people have shared their love of irises.
Located near the southern shore of Lake Superior, stands the Pickle Barrel House in Grand Marais, Michigan. I've included a link below which gives you an overview of the House's history. While the House itself is quite the tourist attraction, the House also features a garden of historic iris varieties. That's another interesting story that I've also included a link to. I'll be posting again in two weeks. Please message me if you have any topics you would like me to cover in my blog. , Thank you for visiting our new, updated website!
This year has been a time of growth and change for us. In May, we hosted our third Open House. The amount of tours more than tripled that of last year, and we had more than 100 people come through to see our house garden. COVID restrictions required that no more than 10 people were in the gardens at a time, so scheduling everyone in was very interesting. :) But we were so happy to share our garden and we appreciate the wonderful people we were able to meet. We love growth, but I also like change. One change I'm making is a break from social media. While I appreciate technology, our garden is one that isn't dependent on social media to grow. Word-of-mouth has been our most effective marketing tool - and I like that. We want people to be blessed by what they see and want to tell others. As we move forward, I hope you'll keep up with us! We have a YouTube channel now - Shana Gammon. I'll also be posting to this blog every two weeks, so please check back. I'll be highlighting different iris varieties, as well as lots of other things I hope you enjoy. Thanks for the iris love! Shana |
